Feature Friday! Meet Bri, blogger behind Soul of Stripes!

Hey everyone, happy Friday!! I am super excited to introduce you to a new series on Style Update Blog called #FeatureFriday! This new series will be an awesome way for you to get to know other #bossbabes and get gorgeous inspiration along the way! Today I want to introduce you to Bri who writes the lifestyle blog, Soul of Stripes. Bri is a Southern California native and sports obsessed stripes lover (couldn't you tell from her blog name?!) She's passionate about blogging and sharing her fashion and beauty tips with the world. She also gets real about what ALMOST kept her from starting a blog in the interview below!

If any of you are planning your wedding (like me) you HAVE to check out her wedding blog post which is linked below... I'm dying over her bouquet and about ready to call my florist and have one that looks just like it!!

Let's dive right in and meet Bri! (Also, hello, #hairgoals?!)

Tell us a little about yourself! Who are you, where do you come from, what's your story?!
Hi everyone! My name is Bri and I was born and raised in Southern California. I’m also a newlywed! My husband and I got married on May 27th, 2017. How is marriage life, you may ask? So far, so good! We love to spend time with our family, watch sports, hang with our pets, and go on hikes around our neighborhood.
When/why did you start blogging?
I first started an Instagram account for my blog back in Summer of 2016 but my first official blogging date was January 17th, 2017 (my one year Bloganniversary is coming up!). This is a very loaded question for me, so get ready : ) I started following bloggers when I first got an Instagram account (for personal use) back in 2012. Julia Engel (Gal Meets Glam) was the very first blogger I discovered. I loved following along with her pretty pictures and all of her travels. I slowly started to discover the world of blogging and started following more bloggers. I was so envious of their life, I kept wanting to know more about them. When I was in my last semester of college, I found myself asking what I wanted to do with my life post graduation (this is honestly still a struggle for me). I always thought that I could never be a blogger because I thought I wasn’t pretty enough. I’m extremely self-conscious and that has totally held me back in more ways than one. But then I couldn’t stop thinking about it, so I decided to start brainstorming some blog names. I thought long and hard but I finally came up with one! I soon got my blog running and it has been a great creative outlet for me.

Tell us about your blog name.
This took a really long time.  Coming up with a blog name that wasn’t already taken was a lot harder than I thought! But I then realized that I had an overwhelming amount of striped shirts in my closet and soon came the name Soul of Stripes!

What is your favorite kind of content to create?
I really enjoy beauty posts! Shooting the content, writing about why I love certain products so much really get my wheels turning!

What has surprised you about your blogging journey? Either about yourself or your blog?
I learned how much hard work goes into blogging. Just think about all the work that blogging entails: Content creation, photoshoots, e-mails, editing, writing, social media, and sooo much more! It’s also hard to put yourself out there to the world, and to hope that the world likes you in return!

What has been a challenge you've faced this past year (related to your blog)
The biggest challenge for me was definitely photography. I first started to use the photographer that I hired for my wedding, and she was great! Buuuut, hiring a professional photographer gets really pricey, really quick. I knew that I was going to have to learn photography myself, if I really wanted to let people into my life (especially when I would go on vacation). I now have watched sooo many YouTube videos and read tons of articles. I’m definitely no professional, but I’m proud of how far my photography skills have come! I’m currently renting different cameras/lenses right now because I want to upgrade the camera I have now. Oh, and I also struggle with editing. Photography and editing is no walk in the park!

What is your favorite food/candy/alcoholic drink/ beverage to order at Starbucks?
Well isn’t this a fun question! I honestly do not eat very healthy, so pizza and Italian food is my fave! For candy, I love KitKats, Reeses, and the Hershey’s Cookies and Cream chocolate bar. As for alcohol, I’m a beer girl! Like literally…even on my wedding day! No wine, mixed drinks, or even shots for me. My go-to Starbucks drink is a vanilla latte with coconut milk. I’m a huge coffee fan and have to have at least 2 cups everyday! I also feel that it’s necessary to say that I’m a big Diet Coke fan as well : )

What is your favorite movie?
Okay, this is going to be hard for me because I actually don’t watch movies! But some of my favorites are Bridesmaids, The Holiday, The Devil Wears Prada, and Office Space! Pretty much anything that is a comedy. I don’t go near scary movies or anything fantasy related.

What is your favorite book?
I also don’t really read books! But I’m a huge Andy Cohen fan and have read one of his books and loved it.

What is the thing you turn to in your closet when you want to feel particularly beautiful?
I definitely take the conservative route with the items in my closet. I love pieces that cover my back and chest, and I also gravitate more towards pants and shorts. I rarely wear dresses and skirts and even heels. I like to be comfy! So I would say my favorite pair of jeans, and a nice flowy top with some dainty jewelry pieces.

What do you hope 2018 will bring? Anything in particular you're looking forward to?
I definitely want to open up more personally with my followers and let them into my life more. I currently take care of my parents who both have dementia so I want to share that part of my life more often. I’m also looking to improve more as a blogger; posting more consistently, improving my photography skills, and even giving my blog a facelift! I have big dreams for 2018 : ) I’m also on the job hunt sooo there’s that!

If a new person is visiting your blog who doesn't know you.. which post would you love for them to read?!
I think I’m most proud of my wedding blog post! Not only did I share amazing photos from my wedding, but I really go into detail of everything and even share all the things that went wrong (trust me-it was a lot!). You can find this post here:

You have a very cohesive, beautiful Instagram feed! What editing/planning tools do you use?
This is another huge challenge for me as a blogger. I’m still trying to figure it out! But, for blog pictures I use Photoshop and Lightroom. If I’m using my phone, I use VSCO and Facetune when needed. I also use the app UNUM to display the photos I’m planning on posting on Instagram.

Any advise for a newbie blogger or someone who wants to start a blog in the new year?
The best advice I can give is to just go for it! Don’t wait until you are ready, just do it! I also suggest to use Wordpress. I currently use Blogger because that is what someone suggested to me when I first started but now all I hear about is how great Wordpress is and how many more things you can do with your blog if it’s on Wordpress. I do hope to switch over to Wordpress eventually. Also, I know this is easier said than done, but try not to compare yourself to others! Everyone starts somewhere and you just have to stay in your lane and do what makes you happy : )

Fun fact about you:
Well this might be weird to some, but my friends always joke with me that I should have been born a guy because of how obsessed with sports and cars I am! Ever since I was 12, I could name every make, model, and year of any and every car in the parking lot. I’m still pretty good at it, but I was definitely better in my teens because I would go to car shows more frequently. With sports, I’m a huge Lakers and Dodgers fan! I also play Fantasy Football every year. I always giggle when I see other girls/bloggers complain about their boyfriends/husbands wanting to drag them to a sports game or watch a game on TV because I would love that! But don’t worry, my husband already knows that about me ; )

Thanks so much for reading! Hope to connect with you guys soon! xo
